Calling all runners, joggers, walkers, strollers, and lovers of winter fun–the Annual Popsicle 5K run is scheduled for February 20, 2016 and you don’t want to miss it! The 2016 5th Annual Popsicle 5K Run in Mocksville will be fun for the whole family, with plenty of food, games, and music. The run even received national attention when it was featured in the 2013 Reader’s Digest “Best in America” issue as an annual fundraiser for local youth projects that lives up to its chilly name.
This 5K is a project of the Davie Community Foundation’s SURF (Students Understanding Real Futures) Board. The board is made up of 21 high school students who are completely in charge – the youth members take on the full responsibility of running a functional charitable board. This annual event is the biggest SURF fundraiser of the year, and it is entirely organized and executed by youth. Once the money is raised, other youth-led organizations submit grant proposals to the SURF Board requesting project funding. The SURF Board serves the youth of Davie County by helping the members learn valuable leadership skills and supporting youth led initiatives across the county.
Our race includes several lively activities including the Popsicle Palooza (how many popsicles can you eat in two minutes), the Brain Freeze Challenge (only a true daredevil can eat three popsicles during a race in February), and a fun run for kids. Visit our Facebook page for more info. You can sign up to participate here. Mark your calendars for a great day of running, philanthropy, and fun. There’s a popsicle with your name on it!
